A donation is the gift of a property (house, shares, etc.) made while one is till alive; it is free of charge and without any counterpart; it is made to a person or to an association who accepts it. In order to avoid disputes, the donation must be notarised; this makes it irrevocable.

Legacy is a property (amount of money, movable property or real estate, etc.) transferred by will. It is advisable to register the will with a lawyer for it to be read and respected. The will can be rescinded any time.
